From Remote Worksites to Premium Caravans: Over 40 Years of Elross Experience

Elross builds complete site camps, individual vehicles as well as specialist projects to suit Operations unique nature.

Long before a Mining And Exploration caravan becomes a place to enjoy a remote campsite, its foundations need to be right.

The chassis. The construction. The layout. The way power, water and equipment work together. These are the details that determine how well a unit serves the people relying on it.

At Elross, that understanding comes from more than 40 years of experience delivering solutions for remote sites, mining, exploration and commercial operations.

It is also the foundation of the premium recreational caravans we build today.

Experience earned beyond the workshop

Building for remote operations starts with understanding the job the unit needs to do.

A crew needs somewhere comfortable to rest between shifts. A field team needs a practical workspace. A remote operation needs amenities that suit its people, location and available services.

Each project brings a different set of requirements. Crew numbers, access conditions, equipment, towing arrangements and time spent on site all shape the design.

Over the years, Elross has built site caravans, large camp units and tailored commercial facilities for organisations including John Holland, Terrex Seismic, Telstra, Fortescue, Parks and Wildlife, Main Roads, DFES, Talison Lithium and Viva Energy to name a few significant project partners.

That breadth of work has developed our understanding of what matters in the field: sound construction, functional layouts, appropriate equipment and attention to the details that make a facility practical to use and maintain.

Leaf and axle suspensions are still common but more deployment is gearing towards independent as we progress forward with technology.

Purpose-built starts with listening

A successful commercial build begins with the customer’s operation.

How will the unit be used? How often will it move? How many people will it support? What services will be available when it arrives?

Those conversations guide decisions from the chassis through to the internal fit-out.

For an exploration team, the priority may be a mobile facility that can relocate as the program progresses. For a larger project, it may be accommodation or a camp unit configured around a specific crew requirement. Other operations need office space, crib facilities, ablutions or a combination of these functions.

Our role is to bring manufacturing experience to those discussions, identify practical options and develop a clear scope around the intended use, via advanced Tender, or Direct engagement with our ability to rapidly Design and create plans with our In-house development team.

A tailored product should make the customer’s day-to-day operation easier.

The connection to our premium RVs

The connection between an Elross commercial unit and an Elross recreational caravan runs deeper than their appearance.

Our experience in remote site manufacturing helped shape the chassis development, construction techniques and approach to self-contained living that now underpin our premium Off-Grid RV range.

The purpose changes, but many of the underlying questions remain the same.

How does the structure support the intended use? Where should equipment be positioned? How is weight distributed? How will the occupants manage power and water away from established services? Can essential components be accessed for maintenance?

For our RV customers, those foundations are combined with considered interiors, comfortable living spaces and the finishes expected of a premium caravan.

The result is a recreational range with a heritage that extends well beyond holiday travel. Its development draws on decades of building facilities for people working and living in remote environments.

Comfort has a place on both sides

Commercial facilities and recreational caravans also share another requirement: they need to work well for the people inside them.

On a remote project, a thoughtfully designed space can make meal breaks, administration and time between shifts more comfortable. In a recreational caravan, that same attention to layout helps owners enjoy extended travel.

Usable storage, practical kitchen arrangements, lighting, climate control and well-positioned equipment all contribute to the experience.

Our work across both markets keeps us focused on that balance between structure, function and comfort.

Supporting the next generation of remote projects

Today, Elross continues to build on that experience through our Remote Site Solutions range, manufactured at our Maddington workshop in Western Australia.

Our capabilities include:

  • Mobile accommodation and sleeper units.

  • Crib rooms and kitchen facilities.

  • Site offices and command facilities.

  • Toilet, shower and ablution units.

  • Combination layouts bringing several functions into one unit.

  • Tailored commercial builds for specific operational requirements.

Off-grid power, water storage, communications equipment and other provisions can be considered as part of the project scope.

Whether the requirement is a single mobile office or a larger camp facility, the starting point remains the same: understand the operation, define the requirements and build a solution around them.
