Ordering a Caravan in Uncertain Times: What Questions Should You Be Asking?
Delivery Day’s are always an exciting occasion.
Buying a caravan is one of the largest recreational purchases many Australians will make. While floorplans, features and specifications often dominate the conversation, recent events within the industry have highlighted the importance of looking beyond the brochure when selecting a manufacturer.
With changing economic conditions, rising living costs and increasing uncertainty across many industries, customers are understandably taking more time to evaluate their options before committing to a purchase.
So what questions should you be asking when choosing a caravan manufacturer?
The Caravan Industry Has Changed
Over the past several years, the caravan industry has experienced significant change.
Material costs have increased. Compliance requirements have become more stringent. Supply chains have become more complex. Consumer confidence has fluctuated alongside broader economic conditions.
While many manufacturers continue to produce exceptional products, today's buyers are placing greater emphasis on understanding who they are purchasing from, how their caravan is built and what support they can expect throughout the ownership journey.
Price Is Only One Part of the Decision
It's easy to compare caravans based on specifications and price alone.
Battery capacity, solar wattage, water storage and appliance lists often appear similar between brands on paper.
However, specifications only tell part of the story.
The engineering behind the product, the quality of materials used, the manufacturing processes employed and the support provided after delivery can all have a significant impact on long-term ownership satisfaction.
A caravan is a long-term investment, and understanding how it has been designed and constructed is often just as important as understanding the features it contains.
Who Is Actually Building Your Caravan?
One of the most important questions a buyer can ask is:
Who is actually responsible for designing and building the caravan? Within the industry there are several business models.
Some companies manufacture their own products completely in-house.
Others operate primarily through dealer networks and use Contracted suppliers to Build certain aspects of the van in stages or supply routes.
Some businesses import completed products and distribute them locally, either as a standalone business or through dealer networks.
None of these models are inherently right or wrong. However, understanding how the business operates helps provide clarity around accountability, support and product development.
Knowing who designs, engineers and manufactures your caravan can provide valuable insight into the level of control they have over the final product.
What Should You Look for in a Manufacturer?
Longevity and Stability
How long has the business been operating?
Have they demonstrated consistent growth and investment over time?
While every business starts somewhere, experience often brings stronger systems, processes and product refinement.

Manufacturing Capability
Does the manufacturer have dedicated facilities, equipment and production capability?
Can you visit the facility and see the product being built?
Understanding how and where the caravan is manufactured can provide confidence in the quality control processes behind it.
At Elross your welcome to book Free Factory tours, actually we encourage it.
We regularly host Factory open Days to the Public to see how we design, construct and manufacturer our products
Engineering and Design
Does the manufacturer engineer key components in-house?
Are design decisions driven by real-world performance and usability?
Understanding the philosophy behind the product often reveals far more than a specification sheet ever will.
Supplier Relationships
Who supplies the major systems within the caravan?
Established partnerships with recognised suppliers often provide additional confidence in both product quality and long-term support.
After Sales Support
What happens after delivery?
Understanding how warranty support, servicing and technical assistance are managed is an important part of the ownership journey.
Understanding Progress Payments
Progress payments are common within custom manufacturing industries.
Unlike purchasing a completed product from stock, a custom caravan is built over a period of time, with materials, labour and specialised components being progressively committed throughout the production process.
A structured progress payment system allows manufacturing milestones to align with the work being completed.
For customers seeking additional peace of mind, finance options may also be available, allowing lenders to carry a significant portion of the build funding throughout the manufacturing process. This is something that I would opt to do - even if you are a cash buyer in this market. Its an easy way to protect your money in times of uncertainty. The lender essentially takes on the majority risk. You may have to still produce a deposit and be subject to interest as well as a fee to end the contract early by paying it out with your cash, but look at it as the small price to pay for an “insurance policy”. Now by no way am i a financial expert, and nor should you treat this as me offering financial advice - but this is the most sensible solution that I would structure if i were buying a caravan right now. Make sure you do your own research. But if this does get you thinking - reach out to our own Finance broker Cliff from Westcorp Capital, and he may be able to find you a suitable funding plan to marry to your dream Elross build.

The important factor here is transparency.
Customers should understand what each milestone represents also and how it aligns with the progress of their caravan.
Why Many Customers Still Choose to Build
Despite economic uncertainty, many travellers continue to choose the custom build path.
The ability to tailor layouts, storage solutions, off-grid systems, finishes and touring requirements allows customers to create a caravan better suited to their individual travel style.
Rather than adapting to a fixed product, the product is adapted to suit the customer.
For many buyers, this flexibility remains one of the greatest advantages of working directly with a manufacturer.
Confidence Comes From Transparency
Ultimately, confidence is built through information and transparency.
Ask questions.
Tour facilities.
Meet the team.
Understand the manufacturing process.
Review the engineering philosophy.
Discuss payment milestones and finance options - even if your a cash buyer.
Compare manufacturers carefully.
The right caravan isn't necessarily the cheapest or the most expensive option available. It is the product built by a company you feel confident partnering with throughout your ownership journey.
Taking the time to understand the people, processes and philosophy (the 3 p’s of Elross) behind the product can often be one of the most valuable investments you make before signing any contract.
